A comparative analysis of métiers and catch profiles for some French demersal and pelagic fleets ArchiMer
Marchal, Paul.
A quantitative comparison between metiers and resulting catch profiles was carried out for seven French demersal and pelagic fleets operating in the North Sea, the eastern Channel, and the Bay of Biscay. Typologies for four metiers have been attempted, based on different factors (gear, mesh size, fishing ground, and/or a priori target species), data sources (logbooks or harbour enquiries), and aggregation levels. Catch profiles were selected through cluster analysis. The linkage between metiers and catch profiles was quantified using uncertainty coefficients, which depended on the metier typology being used and the fleet under consideration, but were not subject to substantial inter- or intra-annual fluctuations. Future catch profiles and metiers were...

A fleet-metier based approach of the small scale fishing activity in the French West Indies ArchiMer
Guyader, Olivier; Reynal, Lionel; Demaneche, Sebastien; Berthou, Patrick; Daures, Fabienne.
The development of the ecosystemic approach for fisheries supposes to improve integrated analysis of fisheries by considering the biological as well as the socio-economic dimensions of the exploitation. A prerequisite for integrated analysis is the improvement in the knowledge of fleets structure, fleet evolution and allocation of fishing effort in the different fisheries. However, small scale fisheries are often characterized by a lack of knowledge on the vessel fishing activity. This paper first presents a data collection methodology recently applied in the French West (Guadeloupe and Martinique) for the follow up of the whole vessel population. Based on a statistical analysis of these data sets, the paper develops a fleet-metier matrix giving the...

Etudes des activites de peche dans le golfe du Morbihan, peche professionnelle ArchiMer
Peronnet, Isabelle; Talidec, Catherine; Daures, Fabienne.
The objective of the study is to improve knowledge of coastal fishing activity in the halieutic and economic spheres. It consists of three sections: On-board professional fishing, professional shellfish gathering, and leisure fishing, this last one being the subject of an independent report (Lesueur and Drouot). The methodology applied is based on implementation of specific surveys about the ships that frequented the Gulf of Morbihan in 2001. The emphasis was placed on identifying the occupations practiced in this zone, on describing these activities and their intensity as well as on analysing the economic performance of these fleets. The management methods, regulation of shellfish gathering on listed sites as well as their impacts on the environment are...

La flottille artisanale française de Manche Ouest. Bilan des connaissances ArchiMer
Morizur, Yvon; Berthou, Patrick; Latrouite, Daniel; Veron, Gerard.
A survey made during 1986-1987 on the artisanal fleet of the artisanal fleet in Northern Brittany and Western part of Cotentin allowed to describe this fleet in term of activity and metiers. Catches are given by species and by type of fishing activity. The result permit to outline interactions between the various activities and exploited resources. A summary of knowledge on exploited species is given.

Métiers, effort and catches of a Mediterranean small-scale coastal fishery: The case of the Côte Bleue Marine Park ArchiMer
Leleu, Kevin; Pelletier, Dominique; Charbonnel, Eric; Letourneur, Yves; Alban, Frederique; Bachet, Frederic; Boudouresque, Charles F..
The overexploitation of fishery resources has led to a major fisheries crisis. In this context, artisanal fisheries, and in particular small-scale coastal fisheries, appear as relevant alternatives for a sustainable use of coastal resources. Marine Protected Areas (MPA) are more and more used as management tools for these fisheries, as protection effects and targeted access regulations may benefit to commercial fishers. Managers and scientists need then quantitative information not only to adapt their management to the fishing activity present on their territory, but also to estimate the effects of MPA management on it. This study provides catch and effort estimates that are essential for appraising and managing the artisanal fishery in the Côte Bleue...

Pêcheries bigoudenes. Bilan des connaissances Activités de pêche, Ressources, Gestion ArchiMer
Biseau, Alain; Maguer, Cedric; Sanz Aparicio, Céline.
Located at the far south-west of Brittany, the pays bigouden is the first of the French maritime regions in terms of landed value and the second one in weights. The bigouden fishing practices are characterised by a large diversity of target species and métiers. Studying the fishing practises leads to a description of the various métiers and fishing strategies together with their trends over the last ten years. Identification of métiers is based on multifactors analysis. Using a classification method based on thresholds of species landings then allows a more objective analysis and leads to a more quantitative characterisation of the trawl métiers, which represent more than 80% of the total fishing activity of this region. Two métiers are based on Nephrops...

The French experience in sampling discards at sea in the European waters ArchiMer
Tetard, Alain; Gaudou, Olivier; Lespagnol, Patrick; Peronnet, Isabelle; Rochet, Marie-joelle; Vigneau, Joel.
This study covered a one year period using onboard observers (117 days at sea). The aim was to sample "métiers" known for their discarding side effects: fixed netting, inshore and offshore trawling. The objectives were (i) the collection of information on the demographic structure of the catches for the main exploited species and (ii) the identification of factors explaining discards, in order to find relevant management measures
